This resource is an open-access training course for frontline health care providers who manage acute illness and injury with limited resources. Produced in response to requests from multiple countries and international partners, the Basic emergency care (BEC) package includes a Participant Workbook and electronic slide decks for each module. Integrating the guidance from WHO Emergency Triage, Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) for children and the Integrated Management of Adult/Adolescent Illness (IMAI), BEC teaches a systematic approach to the initial assessment and management of time-sensitive conditions where early intervention saves lives.
The course was developed by WHO and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in collaboration with the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.
The content is organized into five modules, which includes: (i) the ABCDE and SAMPLE history approach; (ii) approach to trauma; (iii) approach to difficulty in breathing; (iv) approach to shock; (v) approach to altered mental status. In addition, there are reference cards that help support clinicians and health workers as job aids and illustrated skills descriptions covering a number of key topics in basic emergency care.
