This concise self-assessment framework is a systematic tool supporting a situation analysis of hand hygiene promotion and practices within individual health care facilities. The framework also helps anticipation of future plans and challenges. In particular, it acts as a diagnostic tool, identifying key issues requiring attention and improvement. The results can be used to facilitate development of an action plan for a facility’s hand hygiene promotion programme.

The framework is organized into the following topics: (i) system change; (ii) training and education; (iii) evaluation and feedback; (iv) reminders in the workplace; and (v) institutional safety climate for hand hygiene. A leadership criteria assessment tool is also provided.
