The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist was developed after extensive consultation aiming to decrease errors and adverse events and improve teamwork and communication in surgery. The 19-item checklist has helped drive significant reductions in both morbidity and mortality, and is now used by a majority of surgical providers around the world.
The tool provides a simple single page checklist, accompanied by a manual to support the implementation of the checklist in the delivery of surgical care for patients. Although this tool is primarily aimed to be used at the point of care in the surgical setting, health authorities may want to adapt this as a standard in surgical care.
