This guide helps strengthen district and health facility capacity to: produce high quality microplans for immunization service delivery; increase immunization coverage and reduce drop-outs for infants and pregnant women; identify and target the unreached; regularly use data to monitor and follow up at all levels.
The guide is based on successful country experiences in such microplanning. It uses a bottom-up approach starting with health facility (service delivery) microplans, which can then be put together to compile a district microplan.
Descriptions of microplanning at the health facility level includes: (i) quantitative analysis of local immunization data, (ii) preparing and reviewing an operational map, (iii) identifying special activities for the hard-to-reach and problem areas; (iv) preparing a health facility session plan; (v) problem solving using the RED strategy; (vi) making a workplan for one quarter; (vii) using a monitoring chart; (viii) working with the community and tracking defaulters; (ix) managing supplies; and, (x) making use of the monthly report.
Among district-level users, microplanning includes: (i) analyses of district level data to identify priority areas; (ii) making a map to show all health facilities and outreach sites; (iii) making a district workplan; (iv) making an estimate of resource requirements; (v) conducting regular monitoring and review of progress; and, (vi) taking action based on a review of progress.
