This WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist is a tool intended to improve the quality of care for women and babies at the time of childbirth. It comprises an organized list of evidence-based essential birth practices targeting major causes of maternal deaths, intrapartum-related stillbirths and neonatal deaths that occur in facilities around the world.

The implementation guide helps birth attendants and health care leaders successfully launch and sustain use of the checklist. The guide covers: the background of the checklist; the WHO safe childbirth checklist; guidance in implanting the checklist (i.e. engagement, launch and support), as well as tools such as the checklist for supplies, observation tool and coaching tool to support the use of the WHO Safe Childbirth Checklist.
